Silver medals were achieved by the members of the local Orca swim team  at the BC AA championships held last weekend in Penticton. Paige Miskiman dashed and splashed in an exciting 50 freestyle while Tristan Oakunsheyld used careful control of his strokes, building to a sprint at the end of the race in the tough 400 individual medley.  Both received silver medals for their efforts.

For the 10th consecutive year, Ken Hamm will teach guitar techniques to participants in a two-day workshop at the George Ryga Centre. The workshop, to take place Feb. 20 and 21, will give the participants an introduction to finger picking, open tunings and slide guitar techniques.

The sounds of Mexico will echo in Summerland next month when El Mariachi performs. The concert will be held at Centre State Theatre on March 13 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Martin’s Flowers, 250-494-5432. The concert is presented by the George Ryga Centre.

Ballet Kelowna’s Spring 2010 Season: The Masters’ Play performance will be held in Summerland at Centre Stage Theatre on Saturday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m.

A unique new soccer academy course may be offered at Summerland Secondary School for the 2010-2011 school year.

Summerland's Giant's Head School has received a Schools of Distinction award for improvement in the Acacemics catergory of the provincial Garfield Weston Award.  Congratulations Giant's Head School and to all our schools who continue to be noted for both academic, the arts, and sports excellence.

With some help from a number of partners, the Summerland Trans Canada Trail Society has been able to provide some upgrade work this year. Geoff Solly, a trail society volunteer, said four bridges across Trout Creek were rebuilt and renovated and a five-kilometre portion of the trail west of Faulder was resurfaced this year. The total cost is close to $1 million, but the funding came from a number of sources.
